Little Fingers, Big Help: Let the kids Peel the Paper!

Hello dear quilting friends,

I wanted to share a little story from my sewing room this week—one that made me smile.

You see, I had a mountain of paper-pieced quilt blocks ready for the paper to come off. As many of you know, once all the seams are sewn and the block ready to turn, there's still the not-so-glamorous task of peeling off all those little bits of paper hiding between the seams. It’s fiddly work, and let’s just say, my fingers aren’t quite as nimble as they used to be.

But thankfully, I had some very special helpers this week—my grandsons!

They were visiting, and I sat them down on the couch with a stack of finished blocks and said, “Hey kids, would you like to help me with one of my projects?” Sure enough—they were naturals! Their little hands were able to remove tiniest bits of paper. They thought it was a game and we had the best time chatting and laughing while they peeled away like little pros.

It reminded me of when my own kids used to help me do the same thing when they were young. They were always such good little helpers, and I was grateful then—just like I am now.

So, here’s a tip for all you grandmas (and moms) out there:
Don’t do it alone—let the kids join in!

You’d be surprised how much they enjoy it, and it gives them a sense of being part of the creative process. It's a simple task, but it’s one they can truly own. And who knows? Maybe those little hands will be stitching their own quilt blocks before too long.

I snapped a picture of my grandsons in action, and I just had to share it. Isn’t it wonderful when quilting becomes a multigenerational tradition?

With love and happy stitching,
Ruth
